John Hurtford

John Hurford, a North Devon farmer who became a full-time artist in 2001, is an honorary member of the South West Academy. His work, which began captivating audiences in the 1960s, includes psychedelic art in the Victoria and Albert Museum and pieces at The Whitney Museum and The Tate Gallery.

Growing up near Chulmleigh, John developed a fascination with nature, sketching his discoveries. After leaving school at sixteen, he pursued a career as an illustrator and author while continuing to paint. His acrylic works, inspired by the flora and fauna of his farm, have been exhibited locally and internationally.

In 2019, he lived with the Batek tribe in Peninsular Malaysia, an experience that continues to influence his art, which has found homes worldwide.
